Borneo - Dayak Beaded Baby Carrier Panel #196

$3,800.00

Description:

  • Small but mighty, with strong, confident graphics and complementary colors of blue, black and yellow. Possibly the work of the Sebop of or Basap peoples, who displayed hooked rhomb and scroll motifs in quite a few beaded baby carrier panels.

  • The careful symmetries of the large motifs in the center of the panel contrast with playfull asymmetries of color and shape at the left and right sides. It might be the case that the asymmetric touches may reflect the artistic agency of the woman who likely beaded this panel over a pattern template designed by a man.

  • Most of the glass beads in this panel were made in Europe. The absence of the red-on-white beads known as “white hearts” or “cornaline d’Aleppo” is interesting but not conclusive. But their predecessors are present. With opaqe, brick red exteriors over translucent green interiors, such “green hearts” were produced in Venice and Amsterdam at least 100 years before white hearts are first thought to haven been produced ca. 1825-1835.

  • This piece beautifully complements another Dayak Beaded Baby Carrier Panel featuring similar motifs and colors - #184.

  • Additional images are available upon request.

Condition:

  • Very good for its age, albeit with missing beads in several areas and a damaged upper perimeter that has been conserved. The price we’ve assigned reflects these condition issues which could largely be fixed by an experienced beadwowrk restorer assuming you or she possesses the right beads.

Approximate Dimensions:

  • Centimeters: 25.5 cm x 14.25 cm

  • Inches: 10” x 5.75”
