Dayak Beaded Baby Carrier Panel - Object #187
Description:
This is an intriguging example of a Dayak beaded baby carrier panel. In most examples, the left and right sides are mirror images of one another. In this rare example, the upper and lower sides are mirror images. This difference likely corresponds to the kind of pattern template over which this panel was beaded.
In Dayak culture, men typically created the pattern templates over which women beaded. While men carved some templates from wood, they cut others from sheets of folded newspaper. Existing pieces of beadwork formed a third kind of template to which a beader could refer as she created a new piece of her own. This is not to say that she necessarily copied the patterns in the pre-existing piece. On the contrary, she might have used them merely for inspiration or guidance.
No matter the kind of pattern template guiding her work, a women often retained some artistic agency of her own. In addition to selecting and situating bead colors, a woman might insert small motifs or patches of color not called for in the template she used. Often as not, in so doing, she created a more compelling piece.
Made largely with European glass beads, this panel also features several Chinese glass coil beads and what might be a few Indo-Pacific glass beads.
Additional Photos Available Upon Request.
Condition:
Very good, with several small areas of repair in the beading. The vegetal fiber band along the bottom of the panel also shows signs of normal wear and tear.
