Borneo - Dayak Beaded Baby Carrier Panel - #195

$3,650.00

Description:

  • A compelling late 19th or early 20th century piece with strong imagery and asymmetrical patches of color, this piece displays a single dragon-dog creature with four open-jawed heads, the better to ward away the evil spirits that could harm a child’s body and soul.

  • Although the Dayak often depict dragons with their jaws open, rarely are we treated to a view of their fangs, ready to quell predators. Yet, the playful sense of color that permeates the dragon’s dark abode softens their aggressive stances, as does the vertical column of color dividing the composition into left and right halves.

  • This piece was likely made by a Kenyah woman. Further research might be able to identify the exact groupf of Kenyah to which she belonged.

Condition:

  • Excellent overall, with two areas of field repairs in the upper and lower right corner areas where white beads have been inserted. Vertical creasing in several areas might result from how tightly the beads were worked, or from being folded while in storage. Lastly, tassels are missing in the lower left corner and in other areas.

Dimensions:

  • Centimeters: 28.75 cm x 21.5 cm

  • Inches: 11” X 8.5”
