Dayak Beaded Baby Carrier Panel - Object #183

$2,400.00

Description:

  • A small, late 19th century beaded baby carrier panel displaying a monumental motif known as a “hooked rhomb.” Hooked rhombs are common in many Indonesian cultures. Some commentators have likened them to anthropomorphs or human-like figures but we don’t know that the Dayak viewed them that way. Hooked rhombs may have been understood simply as traditional motifs believed capable of protecting a young child’s body and soul from negative spiritual influences.

  • This panel is made largely of European glass beads although a few dozen Indo-Pacific glass beads may also be present.

  • Additional photos available upon request.

Provenance:

  • Anita E. Spertus & Robert J. Holmgren, NY, 1986.

Condition:

  • Very good, with minimal damage to the perimeter of the panel at the top center extending to loss of perhaps one dozen beads. As we have 12-15 extra matching beads on hand, we will inlude them with your order. Also please note that quite a few of the tassels have gone missing in the 100+ years since this piece was made. We do not have replacement beads for the tassels. Resolving these issues would likely require your hiring an expert. Our price reflects these condition issues.

Dimensions:

  • Centimeters: 18 cm x 23 cm (including tassels)

  • Inches: 7.25” x 9.25” (including tassels)
